Despite competition from Indian 2 in the South and Sarfira in the north, the blockbuster film Kalki 2898 AD continued performing at the box office as it entered its third week of release. On day 16 in theatres, the science-fiction mythological epic netted Rs 5.2 crore in India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the film’s domestic lifetime collections to Rs 548 crore. On Saturday, the film will cross the Rs 550 crore milestone and by Sunday, it should be able to overtake Animal’s lifetime domestic collections of Rs 553 crore.

Starring Prabhas, Kalki has proven to be a critical and commercial hit, after over half-a-decade of disappointment. Prabhas starred in a series of big-budget flops following the release of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in 2017, with only one movie – Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire – emerging as a hit. A lot was riding on Kalki 2898 AD, which was also touted as India’s most expensive film ever, with a budget of around Rs 600 crore. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film has been popular in the Telugu-speaking states, which was always expected, since that’s Prabhas’ home turf. But it has also been surprisingly successful in the Hindi belt.

As of day 16, Kalki’s Telugu version has made Rs 255 crore, while its Hindi version has made Rs 236 crore. On day 16 of release, the Telugu version made only Rs 1.4 crore, while the Hindi version made over twice that amount. The Telugu version was also impacted by the release of Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, which made Rs 26 crore on opening day, of which Rs 7.9 crore came from its Telugu version. Globally, Kalki 2898 AD passed the Rs 1000 crore mark on its third Friday, according to trade analyst Ramesh Bala. Last year, two Indian films were able to surpass this milestone – Jawan and Pathaan, both starring Shah Rukh Khan.

Kalki 2898 AD also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan. The film is expected to start a franchise, with a sequel already in development. Director Nag Ashwin has said in interviews that around 20 days of filming has already taken place for the sequel, which currently doesn’t have a release date.
