Kalki 2898 AD’s box office collections seem to be stabilising after a blockbuster opening weekend. On its sixth day of release, the science-fiction epic minted Rs 27.85 cr across India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Out of this total, the Hindi collections were surprisingly the highest, with Rs 14 crore. The film’s core market was expected to be the Telugu-speaking states. The Prabhas-led sci-fi actioner saw a drop of 20 percent from Monday, which wasn’t alarming considering it had a stronger Monday after the extended opening weekend.
Traditionally, South Indian films open with a big bang in the southern markets and then start recording a fall, while the Hindi version is the one with longer legs at the box office. This also seems to be the case with Kalki 2898 AD. Tuesday collections in other languages include Rs 11.2 crore in Telugu, Rs 1.2 crore in Tamil, Rs 0.25 cr in Kannada and Rs 1.2 crore in Malayalam. The all-India nett figure stands at Rs 371 crore so far, and is likely to end its first week run over Rs 400 cr at the domestic box office.
Kalki 2898 AD is trending on similar lines in Hindi as SS Rajamouli’s epic global blockbuster RRR. The Jr NTR-Ram Charan starrer in Hindi had debuted with Rs 20 cr and ended its first week with Rs 132 cr– a figure that Kalki 2898 AD has already crossed in six days (Rs 142 cr). RRR finished its Hindi run at Rs 272 cr, which is what Kalki 2898 AD would be targetting.
Globally, the Nag Ashwin directorial has recorded excellent numbers as well. While the official numbers are yet to come in, the film has likely surpassed the Rs 600 cr mark globally with its Tuesday collections. With no major releases slated in the next few weeks–Ajay Devgn-Tabu led romantic drama Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha has been pushed from its July 5th release–Kalki 2898 AD will enjoy a free run at the box office, at least until the Hollywood biggie Deadpool & Wolverine hits the screens on July 26.
The pan-Indian epic, co-starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Kamal Haasan, received favourable reviews last Thursday and will now capitalise on its good word of mouth this weekend.
