The highly anticipated pan-Indian film Kalki 2898 AD is eying a record-breaking opening at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the dystopian science-fiction film could gross as much as Rs 200 crore on its first day of global release. Not only would this be a record for 2024, but would also rank as the third-best opening day haul of all time. If these projections hold, Prabhas can claim three of the top five biggest openings ever.
Best known for starring in the two-part Baahubali movies, the actor has had a difficult run since then, having delivered only one hit and a handful of big-budget bombs. Sacnilk said that while Telugu-speaking regions are reporting record-breaking pre-sales, an uptick in interest can also be observed in Hindi-speaking markets, where Prabhas’ star is rising. The advance sales for the Hindi version of the film are tracking in line with Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire. Sacnlik said that Kalki 2898 AD is currently projected to make between Rs 120 crore and Rs 140 crore in India on opening day.
Of this total, the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions – Prabhas’ home turf – is expected to contribute around Rs 90 crore to Rs 100 crore. North India is expected to generate more revenue on opening day than Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu combined. Overseas, Kalki 2898 AD is eyeing between Rs 60 crore and Rs 70 crore on opening day, for a combined global opening of between Rs 180 crore and Rs 210 crore.
Despite his troubles, Prabhas retains the ability to deliver grand openings. Four of the top 10 biggest opening weekend hauls in the history of Indian cinema came from his movies – Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Rs 391 crore), Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire (Rs 302 crore), Adipurush (Rs 261 crore), and Saaho (Rs 237 crore). The record for the biggest opening day haul belongs to SS Rajamouli’s RRR, which made Rs 223 crore worldwide. Baahubali 2 made Rs 214 crore, while Salaar made Rs 165 crore. Prabhas has two of the three biggest opening-day hauls of all time.
Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan, Disha Patani and others, Kalki 2898 AD is scheduled to release on June 27 in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil, in multiple formats including IMAX
