Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, after much-delay, was all set to hit theatres on September 6. However, it seems like the political drama is far from seeing the light of day due to the controversies around the movie. Kangana’s film has been put on hold by the CBFC after death threats were sent to the actress and the censor board members. Recently, the actor-politician shared a video expressing her disappointment.
Sharing a video on her official X handle, Kangana on Friday said, “People are spreading rumours that our film Emergency has received a censor certificate, but that’s not true. We had earlier got the CBFC clearance certificate, but now that has been put on hold after people sent death threats to us and the members in the CBFC board.”

She added, “They are asking us to not show Indira Gandhi’s assassination, and the Sikh riot. I don’t know what will be left to show or tell if we remove these scenes. This is very unbelievable time for me and I am really sorry for the state of things in this country.”
Emergency has been in the making since 2022. The movie also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Choudhary, and the late Satish Kaushik. Kangana Ranaut, who has directed the film, will also star in the lead role.
The film’s trailer was released a few weeks ago at a grand event. It showed slain Sikh militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in cohorts with Indira Gandhi promising to bring votes for her political party in lieu of a separate Sikh state.
The scene has not been received well by Sikhs. The Delhi unit of Shiromani Akali Dal has sent a legal notice to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking to stop the release of the film next week, citing its concerns over the portrayal of Sikhs.
In its notice, SAD alleged that the film misrepresents the Sikh community. Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, an independent MP from Faridkot, has asked the Punjab government to ban the film in the state to avoid law and order situation.
Meanwhile, SGPC spokesperson Gurucharan Singh Grewal told ANI, “Kangana Ranaut is known for creating controversies… a notice has been sent to Kangana Ranaut and the people who released the film. The trailer that came, which was seen by the people, should be removed from all platforms and an apology should be sought for this.”
Kangana Ranaut too spoke to IANS about the issue and said, “My film got cleared from the censor. And the day we were about to get the certificate, a lot of people did a lot of drama. There are a lot of issues with the censor as well. So, I hope it gets released. Suddenly, as they say, the carpet is pulled from someone’s feet. I was very confident that I got the certification. But now they are not giving me my certificate.”
