While it’s not easy to laugh at oneself, let alone make it a central theme on an OTT show, comedian Kapil Sharma does so with remarkable ease. In a behind-the-scenes video from The Great Indian Kapil Show, Kapil is seen struggling with his English during his interaction with Ed Sheeran. Despite wrestling with the language, he managed to keep Ed and the audience laughing with his broken English.
In the BTS clip, while speaking to Archana Puran Singh, Kapil complained about how he learns 100-150 words of English in a year, but Oxford adds 4,000 words every year to the dictionary. He said, “We are not able to finish the first syllabus and they are feeding us the next one.” He then takes out chits from his pockets and reveals how he has memorised his lines to introduce Ed Sheeran to the stage.
Kapil was seen searching for chits in his pocket with English lines written on them as he interacts with Ed on the stage. While the audience laughed at his method, he shut them down and told them he is already very nervous as he has to speak in English to the singer. He then asked his team to lower the AC temperature as he was sweating due to nervousness. “English bolke body mein garmi badi aati hai (You feel hot while speaking English)… My English is over,” he said. This made Ed Sheeran and the audience burst out in laughter.
Ed Sheeran, who was in India in March for a concert in Mumbai, had a blast with Kapil and his team on the show. The singer also shared his experience of meeting Shah Rukh Khan during his previous visit to India. During the interaction on the show, he shared how SRK’s family jammed with him and taught him some desi dance moves.
He said, “The last time I came here in 2017 we met, but this time it was just wonderful. He is such a nice guy, for how big he is, he is just lovely. I had a lot of fun; I met his family, and we jammed out some songs. They taught me how to dance a little bit.”
