Filmmaker Karan Johar opened up about the naysayers who warned him that he would be making a mistake by having children as a single parent. He said that his mother, Hiroo Johar, was very supportive during this time. Karan also spoke about the many obstacles that he faced in his youth, growing up as someone who never quite fit in with others and coped with these anxieties by indulging in food.
Appearing on the Jai Madaan – Lady of Fortune YouTube channel, Karan said that he lives his life in a manner where he wants to avoid ever experiencing emotions like regret and guilt. “I never want to have regret, I do what I want to do. I live unapologetically. A lot of people have given me a lot of advice. When I decided to do Koffee with Karan, they told me I was making a mistake by over-exposing myself. They would say that a director should have some mystique, and that they should be behind the camera. I broke those myths,” he said.
Karan continued, “Then, when I wanted to have children, there were many people who said, ‘Are you sure? Log kya kahenge, samaaj kya kahega (What will society say)?’ And I said, ‘Why should I be bothered about what people say when I have my mother’s blessings?’ My mother was so supportive. She said immediately, ‘You want to have a child of your own without a partner, please go ahead. But make sure, because it’s a very big responsibility’. Watching someone grow up in front of you, and develop their own personalities, it’s a big deal.”
Karan said that growing up, he always knew that he wanted to make a mark for himself in the world, and he truly came into his own when he was on stage. Otherwise, he said, he felt like the odd one out, because he wasn’t interested in the things that other boys his age were. Karan’s twins, Yash and Roohi, were born via surrogacy seven years ago.
