Director-producer Karan Johar recently graced the first episode of comedian Zakir Khan’s new show, Aapka Apna Zakir, and revealed during the chat some funny and emotional moments from his life. KJo also recalled the time his late father Yash Johar went through a rough patch that made Karan feel very bad. During the conversation, Karan shared how when a few films produced by Yash Johar flopped, the industry became very indifferent to him. The Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna director also shared his regret of not having his father around when their Dharma Productions entered its best phase.
When asked if Karan always knows that his films would do so well commercially, he told Zakir Khan, “I never felt that I have killed it or my film will do wonders at the box office. I feel like I will incur losses and I will come on the streets; because I am a producer’s son. My father was a production controller for 30 years and when he produced his first film, he took a very heavy loan to make Dostana, and the film worked. But after that when he made many other films and they all flopped.”
Karan further shared, “When movies don’t do well, the industry reacts differently. We were invited to premieres but were given very substandard seats. Dad wouldn’t go, but he would ask me to go. And I saw that pain in his eyes of why was he invited when he couldn’t be respected. Failure is a bitter pill to swallow.”
Karan Johar also shared how he always regretted not having his father around when he took Dharma Productions to greater heights. He continued, “When films flop you get tagged, your failure is announced to the world and it was tough to see him go through that. He would have been very happy to see Dharma today. I feel sad that he left us very soon; he only saw 5-6 years of my journey. That is my biggest regret that he wasn’t around when Dharma was in its best phase.” Karan Johar’s recent productions Kill and Bad Newz have done quite well commercially and critically.
