Kareena Kapoor Khan, Hansal Mehta reflect on The Buckingham Murders’ box office performance: ‘It was a cerebral indie’ | Bollywood News

In a candid reflection on her enduring success, Bollywood icon Kareena Kapoor Khan reveals the driving forces behind her accomplished career. With trademark confidence, she asserts, “I am film intelligent” – a self-awareness honed from her legendary film family background, coupled with a deliberate approach to surround herself with astute advisors who keep her grounded in reality. This potent blend of inherited expertise and strategic decision-making has empowered Kareena to navigate the ever-evolving film industry with finesse, cementing her status as one of India’s most successful female actors.

“I have surrounded myself with people who are very ‘film bright’ and intelligent who always tell me ‘yeh itna hai, yeh itna… tum itne paani mein ho’ (This is how it is, you’re in this situation, be aware of your surroundings),” Kareena told Miss Malini in an interview.

“Each film has a different audience, especially in today’s time. The audience that’s going to watch Singham (Again) is obviously not the audience for Buckingham Murders, it was more English, cerebral, an indie kind of movie. But also Jaane Jaan on Netflix audience is different than the audience that is going to watch Crew. You have to understand how to balance that out, and that, I think, I have learnt to do,” she added.

Kareena’s diverse filmography has garnered praise, but her latest, The Buckingham Murders, directed by Hansal Mehta, underperformed at the box office. On this, the filmmaker recently expressed his discontent, emphasising that his creative investment should not be reduced to financial metrics. “My time and effort is ultimately nobody’s business. Also, it’s the producers who’ve invested the money in the project, and yet people talk about it as if it’s their money. The problem lies in the fact that people don’t see the film for what it does to them, or for its story and characters. They are so interested in the numbers that it has become reductive,” Mehta told Hindustan Times.

Mehta also offered a nuanced view on the matter, saying, “Box-office collections don’t necessarily communicate the entire picture.” He recalled Ekta Kapoor’s words: “Numbers and profits are two different things. The film has been profitable from day one.”

Kareena also stressed on the value of genuine relationships in the film industry, where honest feedback is crucial. Her self-awareness and sharp business instincts allow her to make informed choices, she said. “I’m not interested,” she asserted, bluntly rejecting the idea of associating with yes-men. “I don’t need to socialise with those people,” she adds, prioritising authenticity over superficial connections.

Festive offer

“I am also very astute and intelligent in that way,” she explained. “I know that I do this film for this reason and this film for this much, and it’s fine. I have reached that point.” Kareena said that the versatility in choosing projects stems from her understanding of diverse audience preferences.
