Katy Perry might be in trouble as her music video Lifetimes is under the scanner for filming on a small, protected island in Spain without the necessary permission from the authorities. On Tuesday, the environment department of the Balearic Islands issued a press released claiming that the video’s production company did not secure the proper authorisation before filming the music video for Katy Perry’s new single Lifetimes on the protected dunes of S’Espalmador in Ibiza.
On 8 August, the Stillz-directed video for the track was unveiled, where the 39-year-old singer could be seen frolicking on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera. It includes shots of the dune system of S’Espalmador, one of the most ecologically rich areas of Formentera.
In its statement, the department clarified that it was looking into potential damage of the prohibited area, which is marked by rope. According to the statement, the filming does not constitute a “crime against the environment.” A video or photographic reports can be authorised upon request.
According to the regional government’s tourism website, S’Espalmador–an approximately 1.8 mile-long islet to the north of Formentera–has been part of the Ses Salines de Ibiza and Formentera natural park since 1980. Reportedly, the dunes on the small privately owner, uninhabited island make up the best-preserved dune system in the Balearic Islands and are of “great ecological value”.
Katy Perry’s “Lifetime” is the follow-up single to the singer’s comeback vehicle Woman’s World. It was released to negative reviews in July. Her album 143-code for I love you-to release on 20 September.
