Starring Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Taapsee Pannu and Vaani Kapoor, the comedy drama Khel Khel Mein was released in theatres on Independence Day. Directed by Muddasir Aziz, the film faced a three-way clash with two other films, the John Abraham-starrer Vedaa, and the highly anticipated horror comedy sequel Stree 2.
Stree 2 ran away with the bulk of attention, grossing Rs 54 crore in total, including revenue from Wednesday previews. Khel Khel Mein, on the other hand, paled in comparison despite warm reviews. According to early estimates by industry tracking website Sacnilk, the film made just Rs 5 crore on day one. With Stree 2 dominating ticket sales, Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa are expected to have a tough time in theatres.
Khel Khel Mein’s underwhelming performance in theatres marks yet another setback for Akshay, for whom this is the third flop of the year. His other films — Sarfira, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan were major misfires. The actor has had a difficult post-pandemic run, with only one hit to his name in over half-a-dozen releases. He can take solace in the fact that Khel Khel Mein’s opening is superior to those of his recent duds such as Sarfira (Rs 2.4 crore), Mission Raniganj (Rs 2.8 crore), Selfiee (Rs 2.5 crore), and BellBottom (Rs 2.7 crore). Incidentally, Akshay is also seen in a cameo appearance in Stree 2.
Khel Khel Mein witnessed an overall Hindi occupancy of 40.26 percent with most people catching the film’s night shows. In Mumbai, where there were 352 shows, the occupancy stood at 45.25 percent. In Delhi and NCR, with 421 shows, the occupancy witnessed was 50.5 percent.
Khel Khel Mein showed promise initially as it outperformed Vedaa in the early stages of its release. However, the film struggled to maintain momentum as it failed to convert these early sales into a significant box office results. Vedaa, on the other hand, benefited from better spot bookings and a broader appeal, leading to its superior performance at the box office. Vedaa’s day one box office earnings are a bit higher than Akshay Kumar’s film; it earned Rs 6.52 crore.
