Robert Downey Jr. recently shared details about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Doctor Doom, highlighting the crucial role Kevin Feige played in this decision.
In an interview to The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast, Downey recounted a meeting with Feige, where the Marvel president expressed his intent to “get Victor Von Doom right” and discussed strategies to both meet and exceed fan expectations.
This conversation piqued Downey’s interest in the character, leading him to consider the potential of portraying Doom, a major figure in Marvel lore.
Downey mentioned that he and his wife, Susan, initially believed the meeting was about his ideas for reprising Tony Stark for Disney theme parks. Instead, Feige’s pitch for Doctor Doom took precedence.
Downey noted the importance of moving forward in the MCU and praised Feige’s creative approach to presenting this new opportunity.
Following the discussion, Downey met with Disney CEO Bob Iger, who was enthusiastic about the idea.
Iger even invited Downey and Feige to the Disney Imagineering Campus to explore upcoming projects, leaving Downey impressed with the innovative ideas being developed there.
“I was like, ‘He likes it.’ He [Iger] said, ‘Come by the Imagineering Campus,’” Downey recounted.
Downey is set to portray Doctor Doom in the forthcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
RDJ is set to make a shocking transformation from a beloved superhero to a formidable supervillain in the upcoming Avenger films.
Taking on the iconic role of Doctor Doom, a character co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Downey Jr. will join the ranks of Marvel’s most infamous antagonists.
First introduced in The Fantastic Four comics, Doctor Doom’s insatiable ambition has driven him to seek global domination and impose his own twisted vision of order on humanity.
A sworn enemy of Reed Richards and the Fantastic Four, Doom has also clashed with other Marvel heroes, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, the X-Men, and the Avengers.
While primarily a villain, Doom has occasionally formed temporary alliances with heroes when their goals align, always keeping his own interests front and center.
