Six years after its original release, the romantic drama Laila Majnu has finally found its happy place beyond the mountains. The film, which was re-released on the big screens last Friday, has managed to outgross its original run in just four days.
Headlined by Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri, Laila Majnu was a washout when it landed in theatres in 2018. The film was directed by Sajid Ali and presented by his filmmaker brother Imtiaz Ali. Though the film tanked at the box office with collections a little over Rs 2 crore, it developed a cult-like status over the years, with its music, writing and performances receiving admiration and acclaim.
According to journalist Himesh Mankad, the re-release of the film, across just 75 screens, saw an opening of Rs 30 lakh with a major spike on Saturday when it netted Rs 70 lakh. On Sunday, it earned Rs 1 crore, taking its total weekend collections to Rs 2 crore, which was higher than its original opening weekend, which stood at Rs 1.51 cr.
Laila Majnu maintained a steady momentum on day four, with Monday collections of Rs 60 lakh. The film’s four-day collections now stand at Rs 2.6 cr, overtaking its original run of Rs 2.15 cr.
Laila Majnu will now have just two days of clear run before big new releases of the week take over. These include Sharaddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao’s Stree 2, Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein, and the John Abraham starrer Vedaa.
With three new films releasing on August 15, the showcasing of Laila Majnu will take a hit, but considering its run over the weekend, the film is likely to gain some momentum again as the trade predicts it will still keep running at a lower screen count post the big holiday weekend.
During the film’s re-release press conference, Triptii Dimri had shared that both of the newcomers were gutted after the film failed to find any takers, while Avinash Tiwary revealed how, when he had gone to watch the film with his parents after three days, its “posters were being pulled down.”
“Once the film was done and it didn’t do well, I just wanted to run away from the idea of Laila Majnu and all of that. I just didn’t want to look at that side because it would give me some pain. I would think on the lines from the film, ‘jhoot hai tumhari duniya,’ and today I think, it is true, there is that pure world beyond the mountains. I feel vindicated today as am sure many do,” he had said. Laila Majnu was co-produced by Ekta Kapoor, Shobha Kapoor and Preety Ali.
