Movies and love often lead to heartbreaks and Laila Manju stars know it the best. Actors Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri say the 2018 romantic-drama’s failure had deeply saddened them, but now feel “vindicated” as the Imtiaz Ali written and presented film has received a limited re-release across the country.
Directed by Sajid Ali, Laila Majnu was a box office failure upon its release, despite earning favorable reviews, Over the years, however, the film cultivated a strong cult following for its performances, dialogues and music. The film is especially popular among the fans of Imtiaz Ali, who had penned Laila Majnu with brother Sajid.
“This is an incredible feeling,” Avinash said at the press conference where it was announced that the film will re-release across 75 screens in the country. “On the third day when I had gone to watch the film with my parents, the posters were being pulled down. Now, the film is still running houseful in Srinagar. This is a great feeling.”
The actor shared that despite it being six years, the cast never could “move on” from the film as Laila Majnu would always find a mention in his conversations with people. “The film would keep coming up in conversation to a point that it started irritating me, that enough it has been six years now! ‘Tab kyu nahi dekhne aaye the?’ that was my feeling when they’d share love. But now, the people have brought it back,” he added.
Tripii Dimri, who followed Laila Majnu with acclaimed performances in Qala and Bulbull and became a “national crush” with last year’s Animal, recalled dreaming that she’d become so popular after the film it would become difficult for her to step out.
“Back then, Avinash and I did feel bad. I would think that after the film, I would be so famous that I would not be able to go the market to buy vegetables! None of that happened as people didn’t step out to watch the film in theatres. Today, people confess, ‘Galti ho gayi, wish we could watch it on the big screen.”
When asked in what ways playing Manju impacted his idea of love, Avinash revealed that he wanted to “run away” from the philosophy of eternal love like its fabled leads because of its failure at the box office.
“Once the film was done and it didn’t do well, I just wanted to run away from the idea of Laila Majnu and all of that. I just didn’t want to look at that side because it would give me some pain. I would think on the lines from the film, ‘jhoot hai tumhari duniya,’ and today I think, it is true, there is that pure world beyond the mountains. I feel vindicated today as am sure many do,” he added.
