Former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who died on Thursday after falling from the third floor of his hotel in Buenos Aires, had a history of medical issues dating back to his birth. The 31-year-old singer had opened up about his ailments in his 2011 book, Dare to Dream – Life as One Direction.

Liam rose to fame as a part of the now-disbanded pop group One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson, after they finished third on the British version of the X Factor music competition show in 2010. In the book, Payne had detailed he was “effectively dead” when he was born. The singer had written, as per Digital Spy, “Weird, I know. The doctors couldn’t get any reaction from me so I had to be brought round and although it seemed like I was okay, there were underlying problems.”

Payne said he was born three weeks premature, and he “kept being ill.” Till he was four years old, he was in and out of hospitals having tests done, but the doctors couldn’t find out “what was wrong.”

“They discovered that one of my kidneys wasn’t working properly and it had scarred. I had to have 32 injections in my arm in the morning and evening to try and make me better. I’ve still got both kidneys but one doesn’t work so I have to be careful not to drink too much, even water, and I have to keep myself as healthy as possible.”

Liam Payne was reportedly found in the hotel’s interior patio. According to Reuters, the police said they were called to the hotel in the capital’s leafy Palermo neighborhood where they were notified of an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.” The hotel manager said he heard a loud noise at the back of the hotel, and when the police arrived, they found that a man had fallen over the balcony in his room, the statement said.
