Model-turned-actress Lisa Ray, who received much love for her appearance in the popular 1996 song “Afreen Afreen”, composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and penned by Javed Akhtar, says she gets a “bit prickly” as people still identify her with the song that dropped 28 years ago. Lisa recently walked the runway for celebrity fashion designer Rahul Mishra’s show at India Couture Week 2024. It was filled with nostalgia as Lisa walked the ramp to the live rendition of the iconic song.
Talking to Zoom, in an interview, Lisa revealed that she shares a “complicated relationship with the song. “I was walking on (during a recent fashion show) on “Afreen Afreen”. That is a song, I have a complicated relationship with because it, in a sense, elevated my career at that time but also it is a song, 25-26 years after we filmed the video, still in a sense haunts me,” she shared.
Explaining how she gets triggered about her past, every time someone calls her the “Afreen Afreen” girl, she says, “I have evolved so much from that young girl walking across the sands of Jodhpur to who I am today. I like to think that I have accomplished a lot more as well. I have an entire body of work and life experience behind me. So, when somebody constantly identifies me with only “Afreen Afreen”, and I understand why that happens, I do get a little bit prickly because I get triggered about… in a sense of who I was at that time. I want people to be able to identify me with who I am today — a woman of 52, much more secure in herself, and in her body and skin.”
Lisa, elated with her ramp walk for Rahul Mishra, says walking on “Afreen Afreen” has helped her reclaim a “different version” of herself.
“But this was a wonderful opportunity to reclaim some part of myself because to be able to debut after so many years and I am going to call it a debut because enough number of years have passed and to be able to debut on the runway wearing Rahul Mishra, walking to “Afreen Afreen”, I have actually reclaimed a very different version of myself. And so, moving forward, I think, I’ll have even happier memories of the son,” Lisa concluded.
