Farida Jalal is the latest Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar cast member to defend actor Sharmin Segal, who has been receiving a lot of flack for her perceived “expressionless” acting in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut web series, which was released on Netflix in May. Sharmin has been on the receiving end of trolling, but some of her colleagues are taking on the responsibility of defending her.
Joining Richa Chadha, Taha Shah Badussha, and Aditi Rao Hydari, Farida Jalal, who plays the role of Qudsia Begum in the period drama, has reacted to the trolling, and said that people should be kinder to Sharmin. She said that Sharmin “has done her best” with whatever tools she has at her disposal. Talking to India Today, the veteran actor said, “I know, I am not happy about this. Be kind. What her capacity as an actor is, she has done her best. I don’t feel the character needs to be very boisterous and loud, the role was not like that.”
Farida also said that people are being too mean to Sharmin. She said, “What were you expecting? Yes, what you thought you needed… It’s ok, why should we be mean to the girl? Be kind, maybe that’s her capacity, just that much. I don’t think the real role was boisterous, it wasn’t. She is a shayara, she falls in love with my bacchha (Taha Shah’s character) and that’s it.”
Before Farida, Richa Chadha took to her Instagram story to share a screenshot of a comment that read, “Don’t ever return to that show. It was specifically made for an emotion less hamming nepokid.” Highlighting the comment, Richa Chadha wrote, “Kind is cool.”
Previously, many other co-stars of Sharmin Segal including Aditi Rao Hydari and Taha Shah defended the actor. Other co-stars such as Adhyayan Suman and Jason Shah, however, appeared to side with the criticism. Sharmin herself broke her silence regarding the trolling recently, and said that she was trying to evoke the ‘nothingness’ of Meena Kumari‘s performance in Pakeezah.
