Megalopolis trailer: Francis Ford Coppola’s fable set in a surreal world appears to be his boldest work yet | Hollywood News

Francis Ford Coppola’s long awaited film Megalopolis dropped its trailer on Wednesday. Starring Adam Driver in the lead role, the trailer opens with Coppola calling out critics who gave negative reviews to his older works, like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. The films eventually became the most celebrated films of all time. It almost feels like the director is reacting to the criticism that the film received after Megalopolis’ Cannes premiere, and asking his audience to not believe what they might have read about the film.

The trailer then introduces Driver’s lead character who appears to be a god-like figure in this surreal universe as the voice over describes it as an “event, nothing can prepare you for.” The film is described as “a fable” thereby making it clear that we aren’t supposed to expect any realism here. Driver’s character here shares that he plans to make a “city that people can dream about” as he faces opposition from characters played by Giancarlo Esposito and Shia LaBeouf. Nathalie Emmanuel appears to be playing his love interest who is caught between the ideologies and is having a hard time in picking the right side.

From the YouTube description of the trailer, Megalopolis is described as a “Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America.” It suggests that Driver’s character, who appears to be a stand-in for Coppola himself, is a “genius artist” who hopes to create Utopia but is met with naysayers who don’t agree with his point of view. He again reflects the director’s viewpoint as the voice-over talks about so much to do but with time running out.

Coppola had been planning to make Megalopolis for decades but work finally started on the project a few years ago. The filming started in 2022 and went through many hiccups. It was reported that the film exceeded the budget of $120 million and crew members reported that Coppola would come up with different ideas at the start of the day, which resulted in the schedule being delayed many times. There were also accusations of sexual harassment during the filming of a club scene where he inappropriately touched models and kissed them to “get them in the mood”, as per a report by Variety. Coppola denied these allegations. As per the same reports, there were no intimacy coordinators on set.

Megalopolis is scheduled to release on September 27.
