Mira Kapoor, the entrepreneur wife of actor Shahid Kapoor, was severely criticised when she made a seemingly disparaging comment about working mothers back in 2017. Mira said that her daughter wasn’t a “puppy” and questioned why women would want to have children if they couldn’t spend time with them. Now, Mira said in an interview that one of the biggest misconceptions about her was that she “looked down upon working mothers,” and expressed “regret” over her past comments.
In a chat with Film Companion, Mira said that back then, she felt like she was “pushed into a corner” as people were questioning why an educated woman like her had chosen to be a a stay-at-home mom and had taken a “conventional, conservative approach” in her life. Mira found this line of thought “unfair,” and said said that back then, she wanted to give time to her children.
“While I was pushed in that corner for seeming very regressive, I think I probably acted out by saying things… I don’t think I agree with them right now. I think I have come a long way from that,” she said. Mira accepted that her comments didn’t go down well for a reason, and said, “I can understand why it wasn’t taken well. I think I was in a vulnerable, emotional space. I think I was just trying to defend myself that my choices are also valid.” Mira expressed “regret” for saying what she did and that “a lot of people were hurt by it.”
Mira was 20 when she got married to Shahid Kapoor, and landed in the spotlight. While her first interview on Koffee with Karan was received well, her next appearance, where she made a remark about working moms, landed her in trouble. In hindsight, Mira said that this was a “turning point” that “shook” her. She shared that she is still receiving hate for those comments. She said that when the controversy first happened, she got a lot of support from Shahid, as he had been dealing with the media for 14 years already. “I think it’s about time I am forgiven for that because life comes a full circle and you make mistakes and you learn from them,” she said.
Back in 2017, Mira said at a Women’s Day event, “You know I can raise my daughter, I can be a good wife, I can set my house the way I like, not in terms of the way things should be but the way a home must be with its values and ideals. So, nothing will stop me after that but I love being at home, I love being a mother to my child, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wouldn’t want to spend one hour a day with my child and rush off to work. Why did I have her? She is not a puppy, you know. I want to be there for her as a mother, seeing her grow up has, cannot be quantified.”
