After receiving the prestigious honour, Mithun, in his speech, said, “Giving a speech after receiving an award is the most difficult thing to do. If I was given dialogues, I would have easily read them in front of you, but here I am unprepared. I don’t have any paper with me. I don’t know what to say. My respected President, all the respected people on the dais and the audience and my colleagues, all I would like to say that I have been on this stage thrice before this and it’s all because of your blessings.”

The actor went on to share what happened to him after getting his first National Film Award. He said, “After receiving the first National Award, naturally, people started telling me, ‘Oh my god, you got the National Award’. Toh mera brain thoda kharab hone laga tha thoda thoda (I was beginning to lose my mind little by little), thinking I have done something big. Anyway, around that time, I went to Mumbai for a screening of Mrigayaa for filmmakers and distributors. I thought to myself that after seeing the film, they’ll like me and take me (in other films). After seeing the film, I can’t say his name because he is no more. Because he is no more, I am saying this because if he was alive, he would know that I am saying this about him. So I have never opened up about this before. After finishing the film, we stepped out (of the cinema hall) and I asked him, ‘Sir, picture kaisi lagi? (Did you like the fillm?’ So he said, ‘I liked the film, you are also a great actor, but I wonder how you’d look wearing clothes.’ I was shocked when he said that because I wasn’t standing naked in front of him. Why did he ask me this? Then I realised it was because I played an Adivasi in the film, and I was topless.”
Mithun Chakraborty further elaborated on how the National Film Award got to his head and he “started believing that I was Al Pacino.” “After receiving the National Award, I had already lost my mind. I started believing that I was Al Pacino. I felt mai kuch kamaal kar diya (I did great work). So my attitude had changed.” The actor shared that when he went to meet producers, he would sit with his palm on his face, trying to show that he is a great actor. He said, “Producers would wonder why I am doing all this. They didn’t know I was acting like Al Pacino. After a bit, I would tell them to send the film’s story to my house. Then one producer kicked me out of his office and I stopped acting like Al Pacino. I realised I had made a mistake.”

During his speech, Mithun also touched upon the racism he faced in Mumbai and what he did to overcome it. The veteran star said, “People used to tell me that ‘film industry mein kala rang nahi chalega, so what are you doing here?’ When I would walk on roads, people would call me, ‘Aye kaaliya.’ You can understand how much insulting that must have made me feel. So, I started wondering what should I do. I used to ask God, ‘Why can’t you change my colour?’ But God couldn’t, so I had to bring in a change. I decided to dance. I danced in a very different way, with my legs, so people see my legs, not my colour, not my skin.”
He continued, “Watch my films. In all my films, I danced with my legs. I didn’t stop. People forgot the colour of my skin and started calling me sexy, dusky, Bengali babu. (laughs). I used to complain a lot to God. A lot. Because I didn’t get things on a platter in my life. Whatever I have got, I have struggled for it. I didn’t get it just like that. I used to tell God that you gave me a name, success, then why are you making me struggle every time. I used to complain a lot. Once I was just thinking that maybe that’s how it was supposed to be. But today, after receiving this award, I have stopped complaining.” The actor concluded his speech by thanking the Almighty.
