MM Keeravani on winning an Oscar for RRR’s ‘Naatu Naatu’: ‘Global recognition came for a song that’s not my best’ | Bollywood News

Legendary music composer M.M. Keeravani, lovingly also called MM Kreem, has composed the music for Ajay Devgn and Tabu’s upcoming Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, helmed by filmmaker Neeraj Pandey. This is Keeravani’s first project since he brought home the Oscar award in the best original song category for “Naatu Naatu” from SS Rajamouli’s 2022 film RRR.

MM Keeravani’s music career spans over three decades. He’s made some of the most memorable tunes for Tamil and Telugu films, but likes to play hide and seek when it comes to Hindi films. He’s composed music for only a handful of Hindi movies and has mainly worked with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. In this interview with indianexpress.com, he opens up about the Oscar win, Naatu Naatu and working in Bollywood.

Keeravani and Pandey had earlier collaborated on the music of Baby in 2015. When asked how has their working relationship evolved through the years, the composer said, “I don’t see it as a changing relationship or something that has evolved. Our relationship has been the same from day 1 because I was the same, working for him, right from day 1. The way we work, it is always like being true to ourselves.”

Keeravani then opened up on how music composers try to impress filmmakers with work, but he never felt the need to do that with Neeraj. He says, “There is no hypocrisy, no pretence. Somehow it was established like that, started like that and it continues to be like that. Music composition is a sort of creative work, it involves a lot of self boasting, pretense and hypocrisy. You always try to impress others with your creation. It’s like someone putting on a lot of make-up. So, sometimes people may fall for it, sometimes they may not, but it is a constant fight. There is always a struggle for such kinds of things, which was never there between the two of us. But still, if something has to take a lot of time, it will do so. If it’s taking time, it means we haven’t come up with an answer yet. While working on a piece, sometimes it is a matter of a few days, sometimes it’s just 10 minutes.”

Keeravani also reminisced his Oscar win. On being asked if he felt that the global recognition came to him a bit late in his career as he had also done music for other films like Baahubali 1 and 2, he said that he feels he received the Oscar for a song that wasn’t his best.

Festive offer

He said, “See, late or early, the global recognition has come to a song which is not my best. That much I can say. But, when the recognition has to come, it will come somehow, from any corner. But late? Sometimes you feel it’s late because your lifespan is fixated, that’s how it is termed as late or early, when your life span is not fixated, it comes when it has to come.”

The magic of music seems to be fading away, especially movie music, as people remember older film songs but few of the new ones register. “It’s giving respect to the melody. Melody can be anything, it can be fast or slow. In musical terms a melody means a musical graph. In a layman’s dictionary, a melody is soothing and a little bit slow. So, the slower the melody, it will remain in your mind or heart for a long time,” he said.

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha was originally scheduled to be released in theatres on July 5, however it is now delayed and is expected to release in August.
