After a blockbuster opening weekend in cinemas, the horror-comedy film Munjya observed a drop of over 50 percent in its box office collections on its first Monday. According to early estimates reported by industry tracker Sacnilk, the latest instalment in Maddock Films’ supernatural universe earned Rs 3.75 crore on its first Monday. Starring Sharvari Wagh and Mona Singh in the lead roles, Munjya earned Rs 8.43 crore on Sunday, after making Rs 7.40 crore on Saturday. On its opening day, the film had made a surprisingly high Rs 4.21 crore. Helmed by Aditya Sarpotdar and backed by Dinesh Vijan and Stree and Bhediya director Amar Kuashik, Munjya earned Rs 20.04 crore in its first weekend.
While Munjya’s Monday figures witnessed a drop, the film has brought some respite to the box office, which had been struggling for weeks. Munjya surpassed the recent Mr and Mrs Mahi’s first weekend box office collections.
The Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer earned Rs 16.85 crore in its first three days, despite getting a massive publicity push from Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, and featuring bigger stars. Munjya also performed better than Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, which earned Rs 9.8 crore in the same time period.
On Monday, Munjya observed a total occupancy of 17.05 percent, with most people catching the film’s night shows. In Mumbai, where there were 756 shows, the occupancy stood at 21 percent. In Delhi and NCR, the occupancy was 15.50 percent with 704 shows.
Maddock Films on Monday announced that they will be dropping the first teaser of their highly anticipated Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer Stree 2 exclusively in theatre, attached to screenings of Munjya. Stree (2018) was a superhit. Its lifetime collection was Rs 129.90 crore.
