Film producer Guneet Monga Kapoor, who backed The Elephant Whisperers, the first Indian documentary to win an Oscar, recently celebrated 17 years in the industry, marking a journey of creative exploration and innovative storytelling. Monga’s production house Sikhya Entertainment has been instrumental in bringing critically acclaimed projects to the forefront, including The Lunchbox, Gangs of Wasseypur, Pagglait, and Kathal, among others.

“17 years… It’s really been one day at a time,” Monga reflects. “Our choices define us, one choice after another. So, it is more like what you are liking on a specific day. You also find yourself through these stories,” Guneet tells indianexpress.com in an interview.

Guneet Monga has consistently focused on producing content that resonates globally. “I always had that lens that we should do something that we can take to the world, so we were always learning what’s happening in the world and knowing where we are competing, where we are standing.” This approach has led to numerous successes, with Monga’s projects often pushing the boundaries of conventional storytelling.

One such example is Gyaarah Gyaarah, a police procedural drama infused with science fiction elements. Monga notes, “Gyaarah Gyaarah is a classic procedural. Police procedurals have a legacy of working on TV and now on OTT as well… but this one has a dash of sci-fi.” The show’s unique blend of genres has captured audiences’ attention, becoming ZEE5’s No.1 show.

Guneet Monga acknowledges the challenges of marketing innovative content without established references. “However, what is challenging is when you are trying to release, to distribute, people want to see references, everybody is looking for a prototype. We don’t have that, so every time we have to define it.” Despite these hurdles, Monga’s team has consistently delivered distinctive projects, including Gyaarah Gyaarah.

Festive offer

The show’s success validates Monga’s commitment to serving content that stands out. “There are a lot of police and court procedurals everywhere, bu Gyaarah Gyaarah has a dash of sci-fi. It is about how two broken walkie-talkies are connected across 16 years and two police officers and how it all starts a butterfly effect. So, that tadka of sci-fi in a procedural drama and to land it and to be able to take this to mass India was challenging. It is ZEE5’s number one show, so that’s validating our idea of serving content that stands out.”

Gyaarah Gyaarah is the Hindi adaptation of the popular Korean drama Signal (2016). Produced by Sikhya Entertainment and Dharma Productions, the series stars Kritika Kamra, Raghav Juyal, Dhairya Karwa, and Aakash Dixit in the lead roles. It is streaming on ZEE5.
