On Mother’s Day, X-Men: Apocalypse actor Olivia Munn opened up about a deeply personal story of resilience amid her battle with breast cancer.
In an interview with Vogue, the 43-year-old actor opened up about her decision to undergo a full hysterectomy in April, her fifth surgery since her diagnosis last year. “I have now had an oophorectomy and hysterectomy,” she disclosed. The surgery happened two months after she spoke about her diagnosis of luminal B breast cancer in both her breasts. “I took out my uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries,” the actor added.
Olivia Munn decided to opt for the full hysterectomy instead of continuing injections of Lupron, a medication often used in IVF and egg-freezing treatments. The side effects of the medication, such as extreme fatigue, proved to be unbearable for the actor. “It was next-level, debilitating exhaustion,” Munn shared. “I would wake up in the morning and almost immediately need to get back into bed.”
Opening up further about her journey, the actor discussed her decision to freeze her eggs at various stages of her life. At 33, 39, and most recently, at 42, post-diagnosis, Munn has undergone egg retrieval procedures in the hope of growing her family with partner John Mulaney, with whom she shares 2-year-old son Malcolm.
Reflecting on the challenges of the process, the X-Men: Apocalypse actor revealed that while her 33-year-old eggs showed promise, none of her 39-year-old eggs were viable. “As you get older, one month can have great eggs, the other not so much,” she shared.
Determined to give it one more try, Munn and Mulaney decided to undergo a final round of egg retrieval before starting aggressive cancer treatment. Despite the risks associated with the procedure, the couple was hopeful for a positive outcome. “We just wanted a few more eggs,” Munn told the magazine. “At my age, one in every 10 eggs is healthy, and we were hoping to make one embryo from this retrieval.”
Olivia Munn used her experience to encourage others to prioritise their health and undergo cancer checks.
John Mulaney shared his unwavering support for Munn’s decision to share her cancer diagnosis publicly, stating, “We are very protective of our little life, but I knew from the day she was diagnosed that the risk assessment test her doctor had done open-and-shut saved her life.” He added, “So, while we like to lead our life privately, I was completely supportive of Olivia sharing her story.”
