After his first marriage failed, actor Om Puri was barely left with anything. When he wanted to get married again, the actor found himself in a tricky financial situation where he couldn’t even afford a wedding ring, recalled his ex-wife author-journalist Nandita Puri. Om Puri got married to director Seema Kapoor, sister of actor Annu Kapoor, in 1991, but the marriage ended after eight months. Two years later, he married Nandita.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Nandita was asked if the late actor was miffed with her as she chose to include his first wife Seema in his biography Unlikely Hero: Om Puri, which was written by her.
Nandita said when Om Puri got married to Seema, he “didn’t have much”, except for one flat—where Nandita is still staying–and a little piece of land in Rajasthan which he had to give it to Seema for 8-9 months of that marriage. Nandita said the actor was upset over how she wrote that he gave “everything away” in the context of first marriage but recalled the happier times with him, when the two had just toed the knot.
“Om ji told me, ‘I don’t have money for a mangalsuta for you, I don’t have much now, but I have two hands, and I will see to it that you are fine.’ From that point, we went so many steps ahead,” Nandita recalled with a smile.
The author said she got her mangalsuta “six-seven months after I got married” when Om Puri landed a part in the Hollywood romantic-horror Wolf, which was headlined by Jack Nicholson.
“He got a first-class ticket and told me, ‘Let’s go to the US. I will convert this into two business class tickets and your honeymoon will be in LA, Hollywood!’ Much after we can back, he got me a mangalsutra and a wedding ring!”
Om Puri and Nandita Puri parted ways in 2013. They have a son Ishaan. In 2017, Om Puri passed away in 2017 aged 66.
