Though rain slightly marred the Olympics opening ceremony in Paris on Friday, it couldn’t dampen the dazzling musical performances by iconic artists such as Lady Gaga and Celine Dion. The ceremony also saw South superstars Chiranjeevi and his son Ram Charan in attendance, along with their families.
Lady Gaga kicked off the Olympics opening ceremony with a captivating performance of Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc En Plumes” on a staircase by the Seine River. Surrounded by dancers dressed in black outfits holding pink feathers, Gaga herself wore a heart-shaped plume of pink feathers, a black leotard, long black gloves, and a feathery headpiece.
On Instagram, Gaga expressed her gratitude and shared her connection to the song selection for the ceremony. She wrote, “I feel so completely grateful to have been asked to open the Paris @Olympics 2024 this year. I am also humbled to be asked by the Olympic organizing committee to sing such a special French song—a song to honour the French people and their tremendous history of art, music, and theatre. This song was sung by Zizi Jeanmaire, born in Paris a French ballerina, she famously sang ‘Mon Truc en Plumes’ in 1961. The title means ‘My Thing with Feathers.’ And this is not the first time we’ve crossed paths. Zizi starred in Cole Porter’s musical ‘Anything Goes’ which was my first jazz release.”
Talking about her connection to France, she wrote, “Although I am not a French artist, I have always felt a very special connection with French people and singing French music—I wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the heart of France, celebrate French art and music, and on such a momentous occasion remind everyone of one of the most magical cities on earth—Paris.”
Lady Gaga also revealed that her team rented pom-poms from the Le Lido archive—a real French cabaret theatre—and had their costumes custom-created by Dior.
Celine Dion closes the opening ceremony
Celine Dion closed the opening ceremony with her first performance since announcing her diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome in 2022. Dion performed “L’Hymne à l’amour” by the French singer Édith Piaf from the Eiffel Tower. It was a rare return to the public stage — let alone the world stage — for the French-Canadian singer, who has rarely performed since her diagnosis.
Celebrating her comeback, Celine shared an Instagram post which read, “I’m honoured to have performed tonight, for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favourite cities! Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination, pain and perseverance. All of you have been so focused on your dream, and whether or not you take home a medal, I hope that being here means that it has come true for you! You should all be so proud, we know how hard you have worked to be the best of the best. Stay focused, and keep going, my heart is with you! – Celine xx…”
Ram Charan and Chiranjeevi at opening ceremony

Apart from Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, local metal icons Gojira delivered a head-banging performance alongside French-Swiss opera singer Marina Viotti. French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura, the world’s most popular contemporary French-speaking artist, sang her two biggest hits, “Pookie” and “Djadja”.
