Filmmaker Mudassar Aziz, whose latest project, Khel Khel Mein, was released in theatres recently, spoke about the debacle of his debut movie, Dulha Mil Gaya. Starring Fardeen Khan, the film was in production for five years, and was, in Mudassar’s own words, a complete ‘washout’ upon release. Chatting about the many tragedies that he experienced while making it, he spoke about Shah Rukh Khan‘s special appearance, and praised the star for staying true to his word till the very end.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Mudassar said that everything that could go wrong with Dulha Mil Gaya went wrong. They kept running out of money, a set collapsed, the stars’ appearances changed over time, and three people – Mudassar himself, Fardeen, and producer Vivek Vaswani – lost their fathers during this time. But it was Vivek’s close friendship with Shah Rukh that ultimately facilitated the extended cameo.
Asked if Shah Rukh bailed him out, Mudassar said that he didn’t, because the special appearance was always planned. “He couldn’t bail us out, nor did he come in the capacity of bailing us out. He was simply staying true to his word. He’s a Pathaan, I’m a Pathaan, and I know that our word stands for something. He was just being a good friend to Viveck. He said, ‘If your director thinks he needs me for a special appearance, I’ll do it’.”
Mudassar continued, “But so much went wrong with the film, nobody could’ve saved it. As a director or as a producer, you can erect a set. But you can’t do anything if the set collapses, can you? You can’t do anything if the set’s collapse affects the dates of your stars. The principal lead of the film, the director of the film, and eventually the producer of the film, all lost their fathers in quick succession. You can’t blame anybody for it.”
He said that Shah Rukh was never in a position to bail the production out, nor was he approached to bail them out. “He was being a friend. He was being the man that the industry knows him to be: large-hearted, there, standing, waiting for things to happen.”
Mudassar said that he was financially ruined after the film’s release in 2010, and didn’t have work for another five years. He said that he didn’t approach producers for part-time gigs while Dulha Mil Gaya was being delayed, and that this further contributed to his financial woes. In a previous interview, Vivek Vaswani spoke about Shah Rukh’s cameo, and revealed that the actor didn’t charge a penny.
In an earlier chat with Siddharth Kannan, Vivek recalled, “Shah Rukh said, ‘Vivek has come for the first time. I will do the film, won’t take any money for it’. He didn’t listen to the script also, and he did the film. The truth is that the role was exactly 42 minutes in the script and it was exactly 42 minutes on screen. 42 minutes is not small. He gave us five days and we finished it in five days.”
