Asha Parekh and Rajesh Khanna appeared in many blockbuster films together but unlike Kaka’s other co-stars from the time who often complained about his tardiness, Asha Parekh maintains that she could manage with him as Kaka, as Rajesh was fondly called, would tell her when he would actually show up so she didn’t have to wait on set. Asha and Rajesh appeared together in films like Kati Patang and Aan Milo Sajna, among others.

In an earlier appearance on Indian Idol, Asha recalled that she first worked with Rajesh in the 1967 film Baharon Ke Sapne and at that time, Rajesh would be scared of her. Asha said that Rajesh was an “introvert” and “wouldn’t speak to anyone” in those early days. But soon after, when they had done 2-3 films together, he started opening up in front of her. “Actually he was scared of me. Because he had just started his career so he would just be a little hesitant. One day, he looked at me and turned his face so I felt very bad. I said, ‘no dates’. After that, he was scolded. Then he called me and he said I didn’t mean it like that. He said it was because he was scared of me,” she recalled.

In another chat, Asha recalled that the stories of his tardiness did not bother her as they had found a system with each other. When asked if he was difficult to work with, Asha shared with India Today, “He was a little difficult when he became a superstar. But one of his first films was with me which was Baharon Ke Sapne. At that time, he was a very quiet person, he used to come to my place also. Very quiet, introvert person.” Asha added that his attitude changed after he became successful. “Once he started blooming, he was a different person altogether because he used to surrounded by girls all the time.”

Regarding his punctuality, Asha said, “Once he asked me ‘why do you come early?’ I said ‘it’s a 2 o’clock shift. I have to be there at 2’. He said ‘don’t come so early, I will come at 4 so you come at 4’. So I said ‘I will also come at 4’. So we used to manage it. We became friends after working in 2-3 films so it wasn’t very difficult for me to work with him.”
