Actor Rajkummar Rao said that unlike major stars like Shah Rukh Khan, he isn’t quite interested in building a brand identity. In a new interview, he said that instead of pandering to audiences and repeating himself, he prefers taking them by surprise with his performances. Rajkummar recently starred in the biggest hit of his career, Stree 2, which has made over Rs 450 crore worldwide so far.
On Raj Shamani’s podcast, the topic of SRK’s dedication to living up to his fans’ expectations came up. “Shah Rukh Khan is always there for women, and for the people in his life… His giving nature… That kind of clarity works. Maybe he’s like this in real life, but maybe it’s also important to be a little strategic about how you appear in public,” the host said, and asked Rajkummar, “Do you think that’s for you?”
Rajkummar said, “Acting is an art. We’re making cinema, we’re creating something. If it’s an art form, why am I turning myself into a brand? I’m not a product. I’m a human being who feels things, and recreates those emotions. It’s a very internal process. I don’t see myself as a product or a brand. I want to see myself only as an artist. I’m here to create, I’m here to surprise my audience, I’m here to surprise myself.”
Rajkummar said that he doesn’t plan too far into the future, and accepted that his approach might be wrong. The host pointed out that the biggest stars always have a word that is associated only with them, like “Shah Rukh Khan equals love.” He asked Rajkummar what word he’d like to be associated with. The actor replied, “I haven’t thought about this… But I don’t want to be in that trap. I don’t want to be a slave to that… I’m an actor. I have to be a chameleon, I have to change myself.”
In his career, Rajkummar has appeared in thrillers, dramas, and comedies. He has also spoken often about the words of wisdom that Shah Rukh has shared with him over the years.
