Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma took a dig at Indian directors for disrespecting the audience’s intelligence, as he poked holes in the star-driven approach to creating ‘proposal films’ in India, as opposed to how Hollywood does things. He said that directors such as Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and Clint Eastwood tell stories that are deeply personal to them, and that they have the ability to bring together an ensemble of stars and deliver films like Oppenheimer.
He was asked why it’s so common for Hollywood directors to keep working well into their old age, and continue evolving despite changing landscapes. RGV said, “When you talk about Scorsese, or when you talk about Clint Eastwood, the kind of realism and effectiveness… They’re taking up (interesting) subjects, and getting performances that are top-notch. More than anything else, it is their personal attitude which is reflecting in their films.”
RGV continued, “First of all, we don’t make such films. We think of the audiences as dumb. Basically, the kind of cinema they make, and the benchmark there… Imagine what is the benchmark here. All the big (Hollywood) stars come together and make Oppenheimer. And here, all the big stars come together and they make Thugs of Hindostan.”
But RGV wasn’t exclusively critical of the state of Indian filmmaking. He also praised certain aspects of it, and said that Aamir is the only major star who has cracked the code of making films both big and small, and that Aamir alone understands that there is a different audience for movies of different sizes. He praised Animal director Sandeep Reddy Vanga for having made something unlike anything before, and said that the film became a blockbuster purely because Vanga had the conviction necessary.
RGV has worked with both the central stars of Thugs of Hindostan; he worked with Aamir on Rangeela, and with Amitabh Bachchan on several films, including the Sarkar trilogy.
