Ranbir Kapoor recently spoke about seeking therapy and how it didn’t work for him. In a recent interaction, the Barfi actor also opened up about male vulnerability and men’s mental health in the country, noting how they often shy away from seeking help.
During the interaction with Nikhil Kamath, the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actor revealed that he sought therapy before his father, the late veteran actor Rishi Kapoor, was diagnosed with cancer. “I have tried therapy before my father got sick. I don’t think it worked for me for two reasons. Firstly, because I couldn’t express myself completely to the therapist. Secondly, the therapist, in some way, was teaching me how to manipulate life,” he said.
The actor continued, “In order to overcome all this, there is a method that you can learn by teaching yourself certain things. Whatever he was telling me, it made me realise that I don’t want to manipulate life. I don’t want to put some emotion aside to avoid it because it gives me peace.”
When asked about male vulnerability and how it isn’t cool for men to play the victim card, Ranbir Kapoor responded, “You can’t comment so freely on this topic anymore because somebody might pick up something and you will be called anti-feminist or male chauvinist. I feel whether it is a man or a woman, if they aren’t well mentally, there is no shame in taking help. There is no shame in crying about it, and the people who love you will understand.”
The actor added that it is important to deal with mental health issues “quietly” and “with grace”. He pointed out that many take advantage of the situation and use it as an excuse to avoid responsibilities. “Mental health is something that it is nice to tackle it quietly with a lot of grace. Don’t use it as an excuse to not do things and not be a certain way. It’s a problem, find a solution and keep working at it,” he added.
