Actor Ranvir Shorey spoke about the difficulty that he has been having in getting acting work, despite having been around for three decades in the industry. During his recent stint on the reality show Bigg Boss, Ranvir said off-handedly that if he had any proper work, he wouldn’t have agreed to participate in the show. Ranvir said that he finds it difficult to repeatedly ask for jobs, and that he currently doesn’t have a management team. He also said that even if he doesn’t get proper acting work in the future, he has no qualms in doing manual labour, or working as a ‘spot boy’ on a film set.
In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Ranvir said that he doesn’t begrudge younger people for not being aware of him or his career. He said this in response to a question about his Bigg Boss co-contestant Shivani Kumari asking what he does for a living. Ranvir said, “They’re all young, so I don’t blame them if they don’t know me. I’m not such a huge star. I know my area of existence, where I’m known to a discerning audience but not to the masses.”
Ranvir said that he doesn’t look down on any kind of work, and would happily take on duties beyond acting if offers dry up. “Even when I express that I’m not getting acting offers, don’t take it in a pathetic sense. I can work as a labourer, I have no problems… I’ll do something else. Filmmaking and music are the two loves of my life. I’m happy doing any work in these fields. I have enough experience in these fields to make a living one way or another. Even if I have to work as a spot boy on set, I’ll earn a living. And I will not feel bad about it.”
Ranvir admitted that he doesn’t get the work he wants even when he finds the courage to ask for it. Asked why this might be happening, he said, “I think it’s because I ask for timely payments. People don’t like that. They think I have a bad attitude. But I could be wrong, I can’t speculate.” He admitted that he lacks patience, but said that he has improved over time. Ranvir also said that he has met a few ‘shrinks’, but doesn’t think he needs professional help for his temper.
Even though he sees others around him relying on networking to land jobs, he said that he can’t keep pestering filmmakers for work beyond a point. “I’m a little weak at that. Not inept, weak… It’s not that I haven’t told directors that I’d love an opportunity to work with them. I’ve said this to everybody from Sanjay Leela Bhansali to everyone down the list. But I can’t keep messaging and grovelling, because I find that a little extreme, and I feel like I might end up annoying them. That’s my biggest fear, because I don’t want to get into people’s space beyond a point. As long as I’ve told people that I’m alive and available, I’ve done my bit…”
Ranvir is best known for films such as Bheja Fry, Khosla Ka Ghosla, Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd. He has also appeared in blockbusters such as Ek Tha Tiger and Singh is Kinng, and in the streaming series Hasmukh, Sacred Games, and Tabbar.
