Both the spiritual leader Sadhguru, aka Jaggi Vasudev, and actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu have been in the news lately, for different reasons. While Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation premises were raided by a battalion of 150 police officers recently, Samantha was forced to issue a condemnation after a politician made disparaging comments about her separation from ex-husband Naga Chaitanya. Incidentally, Samantha shares a relationship with Sadhguru, and even posted about the Isha Foundation being her home away from home in the immediate aftermath of the controversy. They’d also shared the stage a couple of years ago, speaking about topics such as spirituality and karma.
The video of the interaction, which took place in Hyderabad in 2022, was shared on Sadhguru’s YouTube channel. A curious Samantha asked, “Another question that has been on my mind lately is that how much of one’s life is a result of their past karma? Are the injustices and unfairness that one faces in one’s life a result of their past karma, and if so, do you accept these injustices and find solace in the fact that the karma is being cleared, even though it might seem detrimental to our lives in so many ways…?”
Sadhguru chided Samantha for what he thought was a ‘schoolgirl question’. He replied, “Do you still expect the world to be fair to you? I want the world to be fair to me is a schoolgirl question. By now, you should know the world is not fair. It will not be fair.” Samantha said with a laugh, “That’s why I’m asking this question! Can I blame it on my past karma is what I’m asking…”
Samantha split from Naga Chaitanya in 2021, and subsequently faced a lot of trolling, which continues to this day. Responding to allegations made by politician Konda Surekha recently, she had posted, “My divorce is a personal matter and I request that you refrain from speculating about it…To clarify: my divorce was mutual consent and amicable, with no political conspiracy involved. To be a woman, to come out and work, to survive in a glamorous industry where women are more often than not treated as props, to fall in love and to fall out of love, to still stand up and fight…It takes a lot of courage and strength.”
Konda Surekha subsequently retracted her comments, in which she had implied that politician KTR had something to do with Samantha and Chaitanya’s separation. Chaitanya’s father, Nagarjuna, condemned the comments and later filed a lawsuit against the politician.
At around the same time, 150 police officers entered the Isha Foundation premises in Thondamuthur, to conduct inquires at the instructions of the Madras High Court. The father of two women filed a petition alleging that they are being kept captive under cult-like circumstances at Sadhguru’s ashram. Both worlds coincided when Samantha called the Isha Foundation her ‘home away from home’.
