Actor Aamir Ali, who worked as a cabin crew member before embarking on a modelling career that eventually led to film and television acting offers, recalled his interactions with the late owner of Sahara India Parivar, Subrata Roy. He said that the larger-than-life businessman would playfully smack him on the face every time they’d meet, and personally granted him the necessary permission to take leaves to pursue modelling gigs. Subrata Roy also refused to allow Aamir to officially quit his job at the airline until he found his footing in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with ABP Live, he said, “When I started getting ads, I took a break from my day job. Then, I met sir again on a flight. He praised me, and said that I was doing very well. I thanked him, and told him that I was thinking of quitting and pursuing my modelling career full-time. He didn’t allow me to quit. To this day, I’m probably an employee.”

Aamir continued, “I never claimed my gratuity also. They still have it probably, but that’s my love for what they did for me. It was so sweet of him; he was making sure that I would keep earning a basic amount of money to run my house while I found my footing in the entertainment industry. Who does that? Then, when I started getting films, I felt ashamed to keep collecting their money, so I told him to stop.”

Aamir said that he still remembers the lessons that he learned from Subrata Roy. He said, “I still value one of his biggest teachings: Kaal, sthaan, patra; time, place, and what you speak. This is what defines you as a person.” The businessman wasn’t immune to controversy; his life will be dramatised in the upcoming third season of the SonyLIV show Scam, helmed by filmmaker Hansal Mehta. Incidentally, Hansal directed Aamir’s first film, and most recently worked with him on the show Lootere.
