Actor Saif Ali Khan opened up about shooting a kiss with Rani Mukerji in the film Hum Tum, which was among a wave of Hindi movies aimed at an emerging multiplex audience in urban areas. Directed by Kunal Kohli, Hum Tum was released by Yash Raj Films to mixed reviews but modest box office success in 2004. In an interview, Saif said that Rani was self-conscious while filming the kiss, and would rather have not done it.
He told Times Now that producer Aditya Chopra wanted a ‘proper kiss’ in the movie, but Rani, his future wife, was nervous. She told Saif to not go ahead with the kiss because she was ‘conscious’. Saif said that he still laughs about it, but they went through with the kiss, even if it was ‘awkward’. In the interview, Saif also spoke about clashing with Kunal on set, and things becoming so heated on one occasion that he told the director that he would rather Aditya Chopra helm the film instead, in retaliation to Kunal’s comment about not wanting Saif as the hero. The role was reportedly first offered to Hrithik Roshan and Vivek Oberoi, who turned it down.
Saif won a National Film Award for his performance, which to this day remains a favourite trivia topic. In an interview with Indian Express on the film’s 20th anniversary, Kunal Kohli spoke about Saif’s National Award win, and said, “We were doing an ad film in Spain. Siddharth was handling the production for me; Saif and I were there. Post that, we went for a holiday. Saif was going to London, when it was announced that he has won the National Award. Saif is like, ‘Should I go?’ I was like, ‘Are you mad, please go!’ He said, ‘I am on a holiday in London. You think they would give me a ticket from London?’ We laughed and said they will give you a ticket from Mumbai to Delhi, not London to Delhi. Then he said, ‘Yes Ammi and Abbu are also saying that I should go.’”
In an earlier chat posted on the YRF YouTube channel, Saif had described the kiss as the ‘worst’ in the history of cinema. Rani asked, “Do you remember how scared we were to do the kissing shot?” Saif replied, “I remember how scared you were to do the kissing shot.” He continued, “So, I arrived on set, and you were being extra nice to me that day, and you were saying, ‘How are you? How was the drive? What’s happening?’” Saif said that Rani was being extra nice because she wanted to back out of the scene. Hum Tum also featured Rishi Kapoor, Kirron Kher, and Jimmy Shergill. It made Rs 43 crore globally, and launched a new era in Saif’s career as a solo hero. Previously, he’d appeared in hit films Dil Chahta Hai and Kal Ho Naa Ho, after starting out as a leading actor in the 1990s.
