The iconic writer duo of Bollywood Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar revolutionized the industry with their films and characters in the 1970s. In 1982, when they announced their split, it sent shockwaves in the industry. The reason behind their split was never made clear, until recently. In the Amazon Prime docu-series Angry Young Men, this iconic team spoke about the reason behind them going their separate ways. While Javed Akhtar recalled how they grew distant, Salim Khan blamed the success they got.

Recalling the time when things started going downhill, Javed Akhtar said, “Salim-Javed did not realize the value of goodwill, it was a mistake we made. We had given two super-duper hit films Don and Trishul, both were golden jubilee films, but there was no line of producers standing outside our doors.” Sharing his take on this, Salim Khan noted, “Success has destroyed more people than failures. Success can go to your head and you can start making wrong decisions. You get an attitude, so you have to control that and see it doesn’t happen to you.”

There came a point where the industry turned away from from Salim and Javed. Salman Khan recalls, “The phone used to keep on ringing and we used to ask someone to switch it off, then came a time where we wondered if the phone was dead because nobody called.”

Trade analyst Komal Nahata recalled how the industry was in shock when Salim and Javed’s professional breakup became official. As the industry insiders remember, it was merely an announcement and nothing more. Addressing their split, Javed Akhtar said, “We used to be together for 18 hours in a day, but slowly we started having our different circles, but the major reason behind our split was that the spring of our career was drying up. The fatigue was showing in our work too.” Salim Khan also said that he doesn’t like to speak about the split, but rather of the good memories they had. “Our split was very civilized, there was no mud-slinging,” he says.

Festive offer

Salman Khan also revisited the moment Salim Khan broke the news at home, “I remember when the partnership broke up. Dad came home and he was disturbed. I was sitting at the dining table in the hall and he told me that they were breaking the partnership. When we asked why, he said, Javed sahab must have had his reasons, it’s not like he didn’t like my walk or the track pants I wore that he decided to do this.”

Highlighting their journey in-depth the Angry Young Men documentary premiered on OTT on the 20th of August.
