Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has made films like Kaante and Jazbaa but his real-life story in no less than a film. Sanjay met and fell in love Anuradha, and they got married when she was just 22. After staying together for a few years, the couple called it quits and divorced. But after six years, they got back together and remarried each other. In a recent interview, Anuradha spoke about their relationship and how they never “drifted apart” even in the years they were not married.
Anuradha said that them falling apart was “not just Sanjay’s fault.” “We both had a part to play in it and I know that I had reached a point where I said I am done,” she shared with YouTuber Siddharth Kannan. When asked if she believed that Sanjay was having an affair, as was frequently reported in those days, Anuradha said she chose to believe her husband over anyone else. “I chose not to believe he was having affairs. I chose to believe Sanjay over anyone else,” she said.
Anuradha said that she wanted to live her life by herself and be independent but in all this time, she and Sanjay never lost touch. “Every year, or every six months, he would say let’s get back together,” she said and added, “We never drifted apart, we were always in touch because my family loves him.” Anuradha recalled that when they got back together, there were both single and in a month’s time, they were married again.
In an earlier interview with the same YouTuber, Sanjay had spoken about many ‘Playboy-style’ parties he would throw at his bungalow in the days when was divorced from Anuradha. She shared that she too would sometimes visit these parties as they had a few friends in common but she could see beyond the farce of the celebration. “I would walk into these parties and not recognise a single soul. I would meet my friends there, hang for a bit and then leave,” she said.
Sanjay Gupta was close friends with actor Sanjay Dutt for a long time but it was during the same time that these two fell apart as well. “I know that Sanjay (Gupta) was really close to Sanju (Dutt). I felt hurt by that,” she said and added that she did not reach out to her ex-husband in this phase as he was already in a relationship with someone. Anuradha also added that while she maintains a cordial relationship with Sanjay Dutt and his wife Maanayata Dutt, she has never discussed what happened between Dutt and Gupta all those years ago.
