Despite coming from a film family that has been in the industry for three generations now, actor Sanjay Kapoor‘s journey has been rocky at best. The actor has been in the industry for more than three decades now, and saw a recent resurgence on the back of OTT’s popularity. Sanjay’s landmark films are clocking important anniversaries — Raja recently completed 30 years, while Prem clocked in 29 — and the actor recently appeared in Bloody Daddy, Merry Christmas, Murder Mubarak and House Of Lies.
Sanjay played a cop for the first time in House Of Lies. “I have never played a cop on-screen, but I love whodunits. When I got this opportunity, I was thrilled. Murder Mubarak was offered to me after this.”
Talking about Sanjay 2.0 and the sort of work he is doing now, the actor says, “I am very fortunate that directors are offering me diverse roles, this is what experience does. They are ready to give me a chance; you can be choosy, but you can only choose from what you are offered. I have been fortunate, I am ready to experiment. I am not going by that if people liked me in a certain role, I will just do those roles. Directors have been so nice to me, be it Bloody Daddy, Murder Mubarak, or even House Of Lies. I was scared to play the roles in Murder Mubarak and Bloody Daddy because the characters could get caricaturish, but they were handled so well that they left a lasting impression.”
Sanjay also shared how in this day and age while work is available in abundance, there is a surplus in terms of talent too. “There is a lot of work happening, but if there were 100 actors 20 years back, today there are 1000 actors. Everybody wants to cast fresh faces, and in OTT you can take that chance to cast good talent. You don’t depend on a star or a face, today everyone wants a fresh face. So if there is lots of work, the availability of talent is also multiplied by 100. You have to be on your toes because every day someone new is coming and he is more talented.”
While he talks about the audience changing, he even shares that content has become very important today. “You cannot just sit back on your laurels today, there is a lot of talent available and directors are willing to take that chance. Even talented people are getting an opportunity whilst stars exist, and big films also get made. If Merry Christmas was made 20 years back, the distributor would have asked for a song to be added to it because it had Katrina Kaif, but those days have changed. The audience also appreciates that, so there is no pressure.”
Sanjay Kapoor also shared if his turbulent journey has led him to be more cautious with his daughter Shanaya Kapoor’s aspirations as an actor. Commenting on this, Sanjay said, “Shanaya has seen my journey very closely, and she is very intelligent, she has seen how I fought it out and understood that one has to keep the focus on work and not lose hope. Just keep trying, and what is yours will be yours. She is working very hard. Even during Covid, she was training and I didn’t have to tell her that. I am always there for her, but to just see if her vision and direction are right.”
Workwise, Sanjay will be next seen in Laal Batti, the project also stars Nana Patekar and is directed by Prakash Jha. The show was supposed to release soon, but due to a tie-up between Jio and Disney, there has been a delay.
