Richa Chadha has been basking in the success of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, streaming on Netflix. After sharing how the show’s creator, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhasnali, made her do 99 takes when she was struggling to get one shot right, she has now opened up about his “strictness” and the grandness of his sets.
While talking about her experience of working on Bhansali’s set, the actor shared that his sets are quite “noisy” and there is a lot of chaos as there are 100-150 people on his set on an average and when he enters, everybody goes silent.
Richa Chadha told Instant Bollywood, “His sets always have a lot of people because they are grand. So, they have a lot of setting people, a lot of people from the art director’s team who look after the candles, the curtains. Then there are people from the costume team looking after jewellery and other things, and the lighting team. So, there are a lot of people. On an average there are 100- 150 people on his set, which is nothing, and if there are extras, then there will be even more people. There can be 100, 200, 300 extras.”
The actor also appreciated how the filmmaker wants the best from his crew and his actors. She said, “What I like about his set is that there is a lot of chaos but when he comes, there is a silent feeling like somebody is here and everybody gets to working. And he has a very high standard, so what I love about him is that he has such a high standard for himself that he will re-shoot something if he doesn’t like it. He doesn’t settle for sure.”
Richa Chadha recently took to social media to thank Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the Heeramandi team. Sharing some photos from the filmmaker’s set, she wrote, “It’s been a month since the premiere, surreal. Contrary to Lajjo’s grief, I was always cracking up and happy on set! Although my part probably was the smallest, the dates were spread out so it gave me the wonderful opportunity to work with a few brilliant hands for make up and hair.”
“I am grateful that your hands beautified me. No matter what an actor claims, it takes a village… and then beautiful lighting and costumes and jewellery,” the actor added.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, also starring Manisha Koirala, Sharmin Segal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shekhar Suman and Fardeen Khan among others, is streaming on Netflix.
