Ratna Pathak Shah and Rupali Ganguly are back as Maya Sarabhai and Monisha Sarabhai, taking their fans down the memory lane. The duo, who first essayed the characters in 2004, reprised their characters for a Flipkart ad campaign. The show Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai was a fan favourite and continues to enjoy a cult following.
Ratna, as the ‘high society’ Maya Sarabhai, sneers at the discounted groceries her middle-class daughter-in-law Monisha has to offer. She says, “Yeh kya hai discounted items, dry fruits at 45% off. Monisha beta yeh sab tumhare maayke see aaya hai na.” Monisha explains the discounts while offering her a favourite — ‘moongfali ki chutney’. A disdainful Ratna replies, “Peanut butter Monisha, moongfali ki chutney is just so down market.“.
This special collaboration between Rupali and Ratna caught the attention of their fans who flooded the ad’s comments section. A user wrote, “Love them together. Best ad ever.” Another user wrote, “Best ad” followed by a laughing and heart emoji. Another set of fans expressed their desire to see the duo again on the television screen. “Love to see both of you again”.
Talking about the show, Ratna had earlier told Humans of Bombay in an interview, “Everybody talks about the acting in Sarabhai. Of course, it is the more visible thing, but it’s the writing, the direction that made the program work. And the way it was presented by the producers and everyone. It was a show which was confident of itself. It came out with a bang. That made a difference.”
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai aired between 2004 and 2006 and returned with a second season on Hostar in 2017. Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai, written by Aatish Kapadia, was directed by Deven Bhojani and was produced by Jamnadas Majethia’s Hats Off Productions. It also starred Satish Shah, Sumeet Raghavan and Rajesh Kumar.
