Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira has suffered miserably at the box office. A remake of Suriya’s National Award-winning Soorarai Pottru, Sarfira has emerged as one of Akshay’s least successful recent films. According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, Sarfira’s day seven box office collections stood at Rs 1.25 crore. The film’s total earnings after seven days stand at Rs 18 crore.
The overall occupancy of Sarfira on Thursday was 10.44 percent. In Mumbai, with 361 shows, the occupancy stood at 11.50 percent, in Delhi and NCR, the occupancy was 9.25 percent with 512 shows. This also marks a dip in the number of shows the film had when it released on July 12. The audiences have shown little to no interest in Sarfira, and are now looking forward to Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri’s Bad Newz, which releases in cinemas today.
While Sarfira’s underwhelming performance has raised questions about Akshay’s star power, there is a silver lining. Sarfira has managed to out-perform his biggest recent bomb, Selfiee, which made just Rs 16.85 crore in its lifetime domestic run.
Sarfira will struggle to hit the Rs 25 crore mark in its entire run. Except OMG 2, Akshay has not had a hit film in over two years now. Even his 2019 film Good Newwz collected Rs 318.57 crore worldwide, however, his films Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Ram Setu, Raksha Bandhan, Bachchhan Paandey, and Selfie have been box office disasters.
Sarfira was panned by not only audiences but also by film critics. The Indian Express’ Shubhra Gupta gave the film a rating of two stars and wrote in her review, “The film is only interested in fronting its hero. Akshay Kumar, who is in practically every frame of the film, isn’t actively terrible, but he doesn’t do anything here that he hasn’t done before.”
