Shabana Azmi says she initially kept her distance from Javed Akhtar because he was rumoured to be arrogant: ‘I did not pay much attention to him’ | Bollywood News

Though Bollywood has innumerable power couples, legendary actor Shabana Azmi and her husband, screenwriter-lyricist Javed Akhtar, remain a favourite for many. This is not just due to the adorable bond that they share even after 40 years of marriage, but also due to their outspoken nature when it comes to socio-political matters. Despite hailing from artistic families following Communist ideologies, Azmi’s affair with Akhtar caused quite a stir initially, as he was a married man with two kids — Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar — at that time. However, the two eventually got together and tied the knot on December 9, 1984.

Azmi, however, recently shared that she initially avoided Akhtar, even when he visited her home to see her father, renowned Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, due to rumours that Akhtar and his screenwriting partner Salim Khan were big-headed people. “Both our fathers were communists and lyricists. We had identical backgrounds. Back then, he (Akhtar) had just started writing poetry and used to visit my abba (father) to recite his works to him. But I kept my distance from him because I had heard that Salim-Javed were very arrogant and to be avoided. So, I did not pay much attention to him,” Azmi recalled during a chat on Arbaaz Khan’s celebrity talk show, The Invincibles Series.

“After watching my film Sparsh (1980), he praised it a lot. Then he came home and invited all of us who worked on that film. He knew and remembered each and every dialogue in it and even the minute gestures of all of us. That’s when I understood that he had good sensibility. After that, whenever I sat with him, I felt that he was so similar to my father. I felt that he was the right person for me and that’s how the relationship started,” she added.

Azmi also spoke about Akhtar’s battle with alcoholism, dubbing this phase as “difficult.” “He knew that if he goes on like this, he won’t live for long and that he won’t be able to do his work creatively. We were in a flat in London. He was stinking of alcohol and I said, ‘Oh my god, this is going to be one of those trips’. Very quietly he told me, ‘Make me some breakfast’. He had breakfast and after that he told me, ‘I am not going to drink anymore’,” she recalled.
