Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest stars in India and has sustained on to that stardom for almost 30 years now, yet he has retained his humility, as per actor-director Tigmanshu Dhulia, who has worked with the actor in films like Dil Se and Zero. In a recent interview, Dhulia recalled how Shah Rukh would sleep on the floor of a bus in the absence of vanity vans during Dil Se.
Dhulia recalled working with Shah Rukh in Dil Se and shared with Mashable India, “He is such a humble person. I can’t even tell you. I could see even during Dil Se and he was already a big star at that time.” He shared that during the film’s shoot in Ladakh, there would be no vanity vans and Shah Rukh would nap on the floor of the bus during his lunch hour but never asked anyone to not enter the bus during that time. Tigmanshu was a dialogue writer on the film.
“When we were shooting in Ladakh… with Mani sir, you would just travel on the roads and he would decide this is where he wanted to shoot. So during lunch, there were no vanity vans or anything so the bus we were traveling in, the passage where people walk, Shah Rukh would take a nap there during lunch for 30 minutes. But we (crew members) had things in the bus so we would keep going in and out. Sometimes, we would go over him to get to a jacket or something but he never objected to anything. He never said no one can enter the bus when I am sleeping. He could have done that. He is the star of the film. If he wants to sleep for 30 minutes, he should get that time undisturbed but that never happened,” he recalled.
Tigmanshu later worked with the actor in his home production Zero. Here, Tigmanshu was working in the capacity of an actor and played Shah Rukh’s father in the movie. Tigmanshu said that Shah Rukh would pull chairs for everyone and ask them if they had had their lunch. “During Zero, it was his home production and there were many other actors there. Shah Rukh was so respectful towards everyone. He would pick chairs for everyone. Ask them if they had had lunch,” he recalled and added, “Yeh sanskar hain uske (These are his values).”
He added that even if a star of his stature does not do such things, no one would mind but he does it anyway. “It’s his manners that make him great,” he said.
Shah Rukh will next be seen in Sujoy Ghosh’s King with his daughter Suhana Khan.
