After directing two short films, Tahira Kashyap returns to the director’s chair with Sharmajee Ki Beti, marking her feature film debut. On Wednesday, the makers unveiled the film’s trailer, offering a glimpse into the lives of three women who fight various societal battles every day, with one common thread connecting them. The film stars Sakshi Tanwar, Divya Dutta, and Saiyami Kher in lead roles.
The trailer begins with a brief introduction of the three main characters. It starts with Jyoti Sharma (Sakshi Tanwar), a teacher navigating her middle-class life while struggling to make ends meet and dealing with a teenage daughter who is self-conscious about her looks and wavy hair. Next, we meet Kiran Sharma (Divya Dutta), who has recently moved to Mumbai from Patiala. She is grappling with the brazen attitude of the big city folks and yearning for attention from her busy husband, who seems uninterested in her. Finally, there is Tanvi Sharma (Saiyami Kher), a cricketer who, as an unmarried sportswoman, must constantly fight patriarchal norms and defend her profession. As they face these pressures, they learn to battle their fears and live life on their own terms.
The official synopsis of the film reads as, “Sharmajee Ki Beti intricately weaves the lives of Jyoti, Kiran, and Tanvi, all with the common surname of Sharma as they navigate urban loneliness, societal pressures, and gender expectations. Amidst their struggles, teenagers, Swati and Gurveen journey through puberty and maternal neglect, adding depth to this humorous and heart-warming tale of resilience, aspirations, and coming-of-age.”
Tahira previously directed the short film Toffee (2017) and a segment in the anthology film Zindagi inShort (2020). Sharmajee Ki Beti also stars The Family Man actor Sharib Hashmi, Parvin Dabas, and Vanshika Taparia in pivotal roles. It will be released on Amazon Prime Video on June 28.
