Though fruitful, Bollywood actor Sonam Khan’s career was brief and she quit the industry within seven years after making her debut. However, during this time, she established herself as a star, appearing in key roles in movies headlined by A-listers like Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Rishi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda, Sunny Deol, Chunky Pandey, Sanjay Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Chiranjeevi.

Despite making her debut in the Telugu film Samrat (1987), it was her role in Yash Chopra’s Hindi action drama Vijay (1988) that brought her widespread recognition, especially for her bikini scene. Although the film, which featured stars like Khanna, Malini, Rishi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Sheshadri, and Anupam Kher, was a commercial failure, it significantly boosted Khan’s career and led to more substantial roles.

Meanwhile, the actor, who had been staying away from public eye since her abrupt retirement in 1994 until late 2023, recently revealed that Yash Chopra’s son Aditya Chopra saved her from drowning while working in Vijay. Recalling her bikini scene in the movie, Khan said during a chat with News18, “I never bothered to learn swimming and we had a shooting in a hotel in Bangalore. It was a one-shot scene where Rishi ji was walking from one point, I walked from another and we both had to jump into the pool. I didn’t both to tell anybody anything so we both jumped into the pool and it was one shot.”

“I jumped into the pool and I didn’t know how to swim. I was literally grabbing Rishi ji below with me. The best part is, people thought it was a shot going on and then Aditya Chopra jumped into the pool and he rescued me. I would have been dead… Or I would have harmed Rishi ji unknowingly that day, it was crazy. The entire unit was there but it was Aditya Chopra realised that I was actually drowning. He jumped with his clothes and shoes on,” she added.

During an interview last year, Khan had revealed that she left the industry after her marriage and moved across the world, looking after her son who was diagnosed with autism at an early age.

“My life was dedicated to my son, wherever I went was because of him. He is autistic, so I went all around the world looking for treatments and therapies for him and also getting him educated in several places. I had a son even before I was 20, and when he was around four, I learnt that he is autistic. So I left, didn’t even think about anything. My son was my focus and I don’t regret it even on bit,” she told Bollywood Hungama.
