Govinda is married to Sunita Munjal, the sister of his maternal uncle Anand Singh’s wife. It may recalled that Anand, a director, was the one who introduced Govinda to the industry through his film Tan-Badan (1986). Recently, Sunita, who adopted the surname Ahuja after their marriage and is now known as Sunita Ahuja, reminisced about the first time she met Govinda while she was still in school and he was in college.
“My sister married his maternal uncle and I saw him for the first time at their wedding. He was in his final year of BCom and I was in Class 9. My brother-in-law told me that Govinda was from Virar (a coastal city in Palghar district, Maharashtra), a simple man who loved his mother a lot. He also mentioned that no girl could impress him. I remember wondering what kind of boy he was that no girl could impress him. When I told my brother-in-law I could, he said it was impossible. So, I asked him what if I did and he challenged me to prove it first,” she recalled during a recent appearance on the Time Out with Ankit podcast.
Mentioning that it was around the same time they had started working on Tan-Badan, Sunita Ahuja said that Anand Singh initially offered the role of the female lead to her. However, she turned it down, considering the workload. The role eventually went to actor Khushbu Sundar. “On the day of the Muhurat, Govinda, my brother and I were coming in a car together. My brother was seated in the middle and when I rested my hand on the headrest, I noticed Govinda’s hand there as well. I realised he was subtly touching mine. My immediate thought was to catch him right away. That’s how our affair began,” she said, adding that they dated for three years before tying the knot. The couple has now been married for 37 years. “I’ve known him for 40 years.”
She also fondly remembered Govinda gifting her a Cadbury chocolate upon finishing college. Sunita mentioned that, initially, she didn’t find him particularly attractive, especially given that she was from the more affluent Bandra while he was from Virar. She admitted that she used to look down on him due to her more sophisticated upbringing. “I then met his mother and she liked me. Since she was getting old and wanted to see Govinda married — being her youngest child — we tied the knot quickly. I got married at 18 and became a mother at 19,” she shared, adding that Govinda’s mother lived with them for 14 more years until her passing and throughout that time, they never had any fights.
