If there is a Hindi film actor who matches the record of most number of films released post-pandemic set by Akshay Kumar (14 releases), it is Taapsee Pannu. The actor holds the rare distinction of being perhaps the only Bollywood actress, who, in August, will have her 11th film title up for release.
“This is not planned!” Taapsee told Indianexpress.com with a smile when pointed out that her latest release Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba will be her 10th release since 2021. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad was Taapsee’s last theatrical release before the coronavirus pandemic shut the world down in 2020.
Since then, the actor has had a slew of releases, starting from Haseen Dillruba, Vijay Sethupathi-starrer Annabelle Sethupathi, Rashmi Rocket, Loop Lapeta, Telugu comedy Mishan Impossible, Mithali Raj biopic Shabaash Mithu, Anurag Kashyap’s Dobaaraa, her production debut Blurr and Shah Rukh Khan–starrer Dunki.
“I am not sure if it landed the way I wanted it to land. I made the mistake of over-planning my successive years, where I thought every year, I would have two releases. In 2020, Thappad was released, and Haseen Dilruba was supposed to be released the same year, but we had the lockdown. So, nothing was released, until one and a half years!
“When Haseen Dillruba released in 2021, I had planned two films a year, but it so happened that I could only have one (in 2020), and then everything got piled on and it started coming out as a burst! It wasn’t the way I planned. It started looking like I am signing films left right and center, which wasn’t the case,” Taapsee said in an interview with Indianexpress.com.
The actor said it was only when Dunki — directed by Rajkumar Hirani –released that she felt, “My backlog has gone out and now there will be two films a year.” Taapsee said her design was going as per plan, but another mix-up happened. Her Netflix thriller Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba will stream from August 9 and just six days later, her next feature film will hit the big screens — Khel Khel Mein.
“Now this has come to the other extreme. I have two films, but they are back-to-back, which I didn’t want! There is hardly a week between the two. But thankfully, one is theatrical, and one is on Netflix, so they have their platforms and won’t eat into each other’s space.
“They are different genres of films, where my characters are opposite of each other. So that way it is fine, but it hasn’t gone as per the plan. That’s why they say life is what happens when you are busy making plans,” she concluded.
Also starring Vikrant Massey and Sunny Kaushal, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is directed by Jayprad Desai while Khel Khel Mein is a comedy helmed by Mudassar Aziz and led by Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Vaani Kapoor, Ammy Virk, Pragya Jaiswal and Aditya Seal.
