Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap had first opened up about his battle with depression and alcohol addiction in 2022. He recently revealed how his friends from the fraternity helped him in his “dark phase” and how Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Taapsee Pannu, Anubhav Sinha, Sudhir Mishra were among those who “constantly checked” on him and made sure he was “fixed.” Anurag also opened up about his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s efforts in making sure that he was fine.
Talking to Zoom, Anurag revealed how Aaliyah, his daughter who is a social media influencer and content creator who discusses mental health at large helped him get through his depression. He said, “She has taught me a lot of things and some other people in my life have taught me a lot of things, they pushed me into therapy, and even my friends and partners have been there.”
He shared how actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui with whom he has collaborated on films like Raman Raghav 2.0, Gangs of Wasseypur, Haddi and more, constantly checked on him if he needed anything. He said, “Nawazuddin (Siddiqui) regularly messages me inquiring about my health, (asks me) ‘bhai aap thik ho? Kuch chahiye toh nahi…(brother, are you ok? Do you need something?)’.” He also shared that actor Taapsee Pannu, who starred in his 2018 film Manmarziyaan would ask him if he is alive. He said, “There are people… Taapsee Pannu calls me, the first thing she says is, ‘zinda ho? Kaise chal raha hai? Health kaisa hai? (Are you alive? How are thing going on? How is your health?)’.”
Anurag also shared how, at one point, his daughter and filmmaker Anubhav Sinha showed up at his residence and threw away all the bottles of alcohol when he was fighting alcohol addiction. He said, “Anubhav Sinha is incredible for the way he keeps a check on me. He is always checking on me, how much I am smoking or drinking. Once he came, he and my daughter got together and threw away all the (alcohol) bottles. I am saying there are people who really…”
He also recalled how filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and Vikramaditya Motwane and his wife Ishika keep checking on him. “Sudhir Mishra, he went out of his way to book me into a place to fix me. There are people in my life who I am grateful for. (Vikramaditya) Motwane, Ishika, is always concerned and wanting to make sure I am fixed.”
Anurag had opened up about his depression in an earlier interview with Indian Express. He had said, “I went into massive depression. But I kept working throughout. See, my way of dealing with things is to go to films, where I pour out everything. Maine Mukkabaaz (2017), Sacred Games (2018-2019), Lust Stories (2018), Ghost Stories (2020) kiya, aur yeh (Almost Love With DJ Mohabbat) bhi kar raha tha. The film had started already in London, because that was the time I had left from here (India).”
He had said that he went into depression when his daughter started getting trolled on the internet and getting rape threats online. When asked if he got depression after the failure of Bombay Velvet (2015) , he had said, “No, this was the time I went off Twitter because my daughter started getting trolled, getting rape threats, and she started getting anxiety attacks. So I went off Twitter in August 2019, and I went to Portugal. I was shooting this in London, and then when the whole Jamia Milia thing happened, I came back to India. I was like, ‘yeh mujh se bardaaasht nahin ho raha hai, koi kuchh bol nahin raha hai (I can’t bear it, no one is speaking up)’. I started speaking (on Twitter) again.”
On the work front Anurag will be seen sharing the space with Gulshan Devaiah, Anurag Kashyap, Harleen Sethi and Saurabh Sachdeva in Bad Cop, streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar from June 21.
