Snehil Dixit Mehra, who served as a writer and additional director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut streaming series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has opened up about her experiences on the show. She also spilled the beans on what it was like to collaborate with industry veterans, and recalled an anecdote about cast member Taha Shah Badussha, with whom she had a difference in opinion regarding one crucial scene. Taha played the doomed nawab Tajdar on the show.
“There is one scene jahaan Taha Shah ne mujhe tang kiya tha (annoyed me). He was not listening to me. In one particular scene I wanted him to have tears in his eyes and he’d say, ‘Aadmi thodi rote hai (men don’t cry)’,” Snehil told Bollywood Life. She added, “And I was like, ‘This boy has to cry, only then the audience will cry, please…’ So, we had to do a lot of retakes there. Taha is very sweet, he then said, ‘Chal tu behen hai, tere liye karta hoon (You’re like a sister, I’d do it for you)’.”
Snehil also shared that since she was a first-time director, working with industry veterans like Farida Jalal, ace cinematographers Sudeep Chatterjee and Mahesh Limaye was an overwhelming experience for her. She shared that all of them made her feel comforted on set.
She said, “There were many scenes which needed a lot of retakes because I was also directing for the first time. There were times when I was also feeling nervous, when there is someone like Farida Jalal, who has so much experience behind her, we’ve grown up watching her, so how do you tell her what to do? I used to feel that kind of nervousness a lot as a first time director.”
“There cinematographers and DOPs who were on the project. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee, who creates such beautiful visual imagery, I was nervous working with someone so senior. Mahesh Limaye sir, I was nervous working with him, bit he made me feel so comfortable,” she concluded.
Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, also starring Manisha Koirala, Sharmin Segal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shekhar Suman and Fardeen Khan among others, is streaming on Netflix.
