Actor Taha Shah Badussha says it is time people go easy on his Heeramandi co-star Sharmin Segal, who has been at the receiving end of a lot of trolling for her performance in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali series. Sharmin, who is the niece of the celebrated filmmaker, became a subject of memes since the show dropped on May 1.
Reacting to all the criticism she has received, Taha Shah told Puja Talwar in an interview that even his parents had given him “logical explanations” while discussing Sharmin’s performance on the period drama.
“They have picked on her and whoever I have spoken to, I have made it a point to say that… We are nobody to talk about the audience, but I can talk about people, who are close to me, like my mom and dad. They have come up to me and shared logical explanation as to how her performance was and it made complete sense. I was with her on set for almost 100-110 days. I have seen her put her best foot forward,” he added.
Taha, who is paired opposite Sharmin on the show romantically, lauded the actor for knowing the script of Heeramandi thoroughly, to the point of being able to note loopholes in it. Taha said Sharmin’s career–who is just one film old–has begun and it is unfair to judge her so strongly.
“When we would discuss the script, she would actually be able to point out logical explanation to something which should not be there. She was an AD to Bhansali initially, she did Malal before and then got into this. She knows his process of working and also went through the whole script. I have always seen her come up with great ideas, put her best foot forward. So I would plead that people give her a break. She is still young in the industry, and I know that this is just her starting point. I really hope they take it easy on her,” he added.
In the past, several people associated with the series talked in favour of Sharmin and have slammed the criticism she has been receiving. The series also stars Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, and Fardeen Khan, among others. Heeramandi is currently streaming on Netflix.
