In the zany world of The Great Indian Kapil Show, guests aren’t just visitors — they’re the secret sauce in its offering. Their laughter — if and when it materialises — triggers an explosion of mirth in the audience and provides legitimacy to Kapil Sharma’s (and his team’s) attempts at comedy. While this hasn’t always been the case this season, Saturday’s episode was different. Watching sporting icons Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Mary Kom, and Sift Kaur grin, giggle, and guffaw at the hosts’ antics, one could be forgiven for thinking they were catching up with long-lost connections at a family reunion. Their enjoyment, genuine and palpable, rubbed off on a roaring audience and filled the room with an infectious energy.
From the get-go, Kapil and his team seemed completely at ease, as if they had no pressure to impress. They were there to perform, to make their guests laugh, and to enjoy the process themselves. This relaxed vibe was largely due to the guests, who, as fans of the show, were excited to be a part of it. Their authenticity and genuineness lent the show a refreshing tone that had been missing for a while.
Mary Kom, in particular, brought her full energy to the show. She shared hilarious anecdotes from her personal life, often leaving Kapil scrambling to keep up with her humour. Meanwhile, Kapil met his match in Sania Mirza, who was the sass queen matching the comedian joke for joke. Their unfiltered banter was pure comedic gold, with Sania’s witty comebacks leaving Kapil on the ropes. At one point, he jokingly pleaded, “If I don’t make these lame jokes, should we all go to the show ‘Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’?” The two even performed a small skit together that had the audience in stitches. Their chemistry was so good, it left one wishing for a show with them as co-hosts.
Krishna Abhishek was on fire, delivering punchline after punchline in his spot-on portrayal of veteran actor Jeetendra. His no-holds-barred performance had the guests rolling with laughter, and even he had to break character occasionally to laugh at his own jokes. After Krishna’s winning performance, everything else seemed like a warm-up act. Kiku Sharda’s turn as Chef Dhaniya Lal was forgettable, and Sunil Grover’s Engineer Chumbak started strong but quickly lost its spark, stretching the joke way too thin.
The only problem with the latest episode was its run time of an hour. Plenty of segments could’ve been chopped without losing a single laugh.
Despite this tiny glitch, this was probably one of the best episodes of Kapil Sharma’s new show. For once, the comedian and his team didn’t lean on their guests to share life stories to keep things interesting. Instead, they took the reins and delivered an hour-long knockout show filled with pure comedic banter and jokes that hit the mark. The writing team deserves a credit here for crafting genuinely funny sketches that brought back memories of the show’s glory days. Kapil and his crew didn’t just put the ‘punch’ back in the punchline—they knocked it out of the park!
